SC bats for Great Indian Bustard

· The Supreme Court recently intervened on behalf of the critically endangered Great Indian Bustards over the birds falling dead after colliding with power lines running through their dwindling natural habitats in Gujarat and Rajasthan.

Threat from Electrocution
· The Court will examine whether overhead power cables can be replaced with underground ones to save one of the heaviest flying birds on the planet.
· But the low voltage lines can go underground not the high voltage ones.
· For this an alternative mechanism is discussed to install flight bird divertors to guide the birds away from the power lines.

Great Indian Bustard
· The Great Indian Bustard (Ardeotis nigriceps) is native to the Indian subcontinent.
· They are large terrestrial birds found in dry grasslands and steppe regions.
· It is among the heaviest of flying birds in existence.
· It is listed as critically endangered in the IUCN Red List.
