About the Project

Approximately 5 million people work (full or part-time) in the sanitation sector, and nearly 40% of these workers work in "high risk" conditions such as septic tank cleaning, sewer cleaning,STP/FSTP maintenance, public toilet cleaning, and drain cleaning. Even though studies have captured that sanitation workers are exposed to repetitive awkward postures often forprolonged durations, making them susceptible to Work-related Musculoskeletal Disorders(WMSDs).

However, such risks are often "invisible" to variety of decision-makers. Such is thestatus of attention on the topic that comprehensive methodologies to quantify or measure such risks does not exist yet.

To address this issue, an ongoing project led by the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM) aims to develop an approach that can help quantify the WMSD risk based on multiple datapoints such as

1) recorded videos of the sanitation workers working in actual conditions; 2)interviews of the workers aimed at understanding their various health issues;

3) focused group discussions (FGDs) on getting additional qualitative information on the workers’ understanding of occupational risk.

IIT Madras will closely collaborate with the Administrative Staff College of India, a premier institute providing training and research in diverse disciplines for carrying out this work. The field research of this project will be carried out in Hyderabad.

About the Role

The Senior Research Associate will conduct in-depth field research (primary data collection) and desk-based research (secondary data collection) to build an empirical understanding of the effects of sanitation work on the musculoskeletal health of sanitation workers.

This would involve going to the field and collect information through interviews, observations, video and image recording, and document reviews to understand the complexity of WMSD management for the sanitation workers.

The work will also require analysis of the different postures of sanitation workers engaged in work such as septic tank desludging, sewer cleaning, STP/FSTP maintenance operations etc.

The researcher is also expected to familiarize themselves with the published literature and reports on the topic and utilize the knowledge gained to analyse the sanitation specific data and help develop methods specific for the sanitation workers.

This is a one-year (minimum 10 months) contract basis full-time role based out of the Administrative Staff College of India (ASCI), Hyderabad, since the field sites will be in Telangana and would involve extensive travel to field sites across Telangana.
