Recently, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Water Resources submitted its report on demand for grants to the Lok Sabha, in which it has underlined the absence of tap water in half of the schools and anganwadis throughout India.
· On October 2, 2020, Ministry of Jal Shakti launched a special mission mode campaign to provide potable piped water supply in all Schools & Anganwadi Centres across the nation within a short span of 100 days.
· The campaign is under the aegis of the Union government’s ambitious welfare scheme, Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM)
· Inspite of the campaign period ending on January 10, 2021, the coverage, as on February 15 was recorded to be only 48.5% of anganwadis and 53.3% of schools. Hence the campaign was extended till March 31, 2021.
· 7 states achieved 100% coverage, while three states had less than 15% coverage.
· Around 1.82 lakh grey water management structures and 1.42 lakh rainwater harvesting structures have been constructed in some schools and anganwadis during the campaign period.
· The campaign is significant, especially with schools reopening and the necessity to follow the safety protocols in school to avoid contracting coronavirus and children’s susceptibility to water borne diseases, the standing committee stressed.
